For pure text, an E Ink Carta 1300 panel is still the best e-reader screen you can buy as of December 2025 — higher contrast and finer typography than any color panel E Ink currently ships. Kaleido 3 makes sense only if comics, manga, or color-highlighted documents are a real part of your reading week, because its color layer costs you resolution. E Ink has described both panels in its own product documentation, and that documentation is the basis for everything below.

What screen families do current e-readers actually use?

Almost every e-reader sold as of late 2025 runs one of three E Ink panel families. Carta 1200 and Carta 1300 are monochrome panels — the ones Amazon, Kobo, and PocketBook use in their mainstream readers. How much sharper is Carta 1300 than Kaleido 3 in color mode?

What should you choose if you mostly read novels?

A monochrome Carta panel, almost without argument. Novels are black text on white; color capability buys you nothing and costs resolution on nothing you see. The warm-light front light, physical size, and ecosystem fit matter far more for a novel reader than the 1200-versus-1300 difference — though if the two are the same price, take the newer film. If you read manga, PDF magazines, or textbooks with color figures, Kaleido 3's muted palette and softer detail are a genuine trade-off, not a free upgrade.

What about ghosting — do newer panels refresh cleaner?

Ghosting, the faint residue of the previous page, is a property of how E Ink physically moves pigment capsules, and every panel family exhibits some. Makers handle it in firmware: after a set number of page turns, the device flashes a full refresh to reset the screen, and most readers let you change that interval in settings. In its Carta 1300 materials, E Ink describes improved waveforms — the electrical patterns that drive a refresh — which the company links to cleaner transitions. Kaleido 3's color mode is the most ghost-prone of the three: the color filter softens the transitions, so makers like Onyx Boox expose a dedicated "high-speed" color refresh mode in their firmware, trading some color fidelity for fewer flashes. None of this is our observation; it is what the makers document, and your tolerance for a periodic black flash is honestly the bigger variable.

Should you wait for the next color generation?

If your reading is mostly text, no — the monochrome panels shipping today are mature, and waiting costs you reading time for a marginal gain. If color is the reason you are shopping, it is worth knowing that E Ink has continued to invest in color: the company's Gallery 3 and MOX-type panels, shown in trade demonstrations through 2024 and 2025, promise fuller color at larger sizes, but as of December 2025 they appear in very few shipping consumer readers and mostly in signage and select premium devices. The practical 2025–2026 color choice in mainstream e-readers remains Kaleido 3, on the evidence of what Kobo, Amazon's ColorSoft, and Boox actually ship per their spec pages.
